Safety measures taken due to explosions at Chernihiv region ammo dump – General Staff
The General Staff of Ukraine's Armed Forces has said because of explosions at the sixth arsenal in Ichnia (Chernihiv region), safety measures have been taken throughout the entire region.
Information about explosions was reported at 03:30 on Tuesday by the chief of the arsenal.
"Near the town of Ichnia in Chernihiv region there was an explosion in a technical area. The size of the blast is being determined. All emergency services and local authorities have been notified. Residents are being evacuated. The headquarters of a team to deal with the emergency is being formed," the General Staff's press service said, adding that the chief of General Staff is in charge of the team dealing with the emergency.
"Safety measures are being implemented throughout Chernihiv region and along Ukraine's border," the General Staff said.
First Deputy Interior Minister Serhiy Yarovy said no information about casualties has been received.
"An operational headquarters has been deployed. Teams from the State Emergencies Service and the National Guard continue to work to evacuate the population ... There is no information about casualties," the Interior Ministry's press service said.
According to the press service, about 10,000 people have already been evacuated. Some 220 emergency workers took part in the evacuation and 60 State Emergencies Service vehicles were dispatched to the scene, along with 21 firefighting units numbering 105 persons, 39 vehicles and 150 police from Kyiv city's and Kyiv region's National Police force and 100 National Guard troops to patrol areas near the emergency.
Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman has gone to the scene of the emergency.
"There is an emergency situation in Chernihiv region. An emergency operation headquarters has been established. I am flying there now," Groysman said on Twitter.
