Fugitive ex-mayor of Kherson comes back home - media

Former mayor of Kherson, member of Kherson City Council Volodymyr Saldo, who earlier claimed he had been abducted in the Dominican Republic and then arrested on charges of abduction of a person in that country has returned to Ukraine, media outlet zn.ua reported.

"He arrived in Kherson by plane, by a regular flight," his aide, Olha Spivakina, told zn.ua on Friday.

In her words, he "arrived in Kherson as an ordinary citizen, not being on Interpol's wanted list."

As was reported, the 112.Ukraine television channel reported on August 25 with reference to the Ukrainian Embassy to Cuba that former Kherson Mayor Volodymyr Saldo had been detained on suspicion of kidnapping in the Dominican Republic. Ukraine's Foreign Ministry confirmed the detention of a Ukrainian citizen in the Dominican Republic on charges of abduction of another person, without disclosing the identity.

Late in August 2016, the ex-mayor's wife, Liubov Saldo, claimed her husband had been abducted in the Dominican Republic and had been subject to tortures for 50 days.

According to her, a man who named himself Denys Pashchenko invited Saldo to the Dominican Republic in June for negotiating a possible joint venture. "After Volodymyr arrived in the Dominican Republic, there were no direct phone calls, only messaging. Allegedly because of bad communication," she said. "Later on I learnt that all messaging was at gunpoint, with a bag on his head," she said.

She claimed that Dominican police arrested Saldo on August 19 upon Pashchenko's application and on charges of alleged abduction of Pashchenko.

Saldo ran for Kherson mayor as a Nash Kray Party nominee in 2015 but lost. He is currently a member of Kherson City Council.
