Surplus of Ukraine's balance of payments comes to $489 mln in June - NBU

The surplus of Ukraine's consolidated balance of payments in June 2015 amounted to $489 million, while in June 2014 its deficit amounted to $786 million.

This preliminary data has been posted on the website of the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU).

According to an NBU report, the formation of the consolidated balance led to the increase in international reserves to $10.3 billion, which will provide financing of imports for the future period of 2.2 months.

According to the NBU, the surplus of the current account in June was $361 million, whereas in the corresponding period last year the deficit was $528 million.

Describing the situation in foreign trade, the NBU said that the decline in exports in June slowed to 29.89% (in May - 42.3%), imports - by 38.7% (45.2%). The volume of exports totaled $2.9 billion, while the rate of decline slowed down in almost all major groups of goods, in particular steel products - by 47.3% (in May - 49.3%), mineral products (including ore) - 44.9% (2.5 times), engineering products - by 43.9% (47.9%), chemicals - by 26.2% (46.1%). Food exports increased by 9.3% due to the growth of exports of grains (1.9 times) and oilseeds (3.4 times).

However, exports of goods in January-June decreased by 35.4%. In particular, exports to the EU countries, whose share of total exports amounted to 27.8% (for the six months of 2014 - 29.8%), decreased by 39.7%. Exports to Russia decreased by 2.2 times, falling to 13.4% (from 18.9% in January-June 2014).

According to the regulator, imports in June amounted to $2.9 billion, and energy and non-energy imports decreased by 38.5% (in May - 45.2%) and 38.7% (45.1%) respectively, in particular engineering products - by 37.8%, chemicals - by 27.4%, food - by 44.3%.
