UNHCR says around 30,000 Ukrainian refugees are in Russia – Foreign Ministry

There are currently around 30,000 refugees from Ukraine living in Russia, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Foreign Ministry of Ukraine spokesman Yevhen Perebyinis has said.

"Our embassy in Moscow requested clarification from representative of the UNHCR Baisa Vak-Voya, who said that according to their statistics, UNHCR can confirm that only 30,000 refugees from Ukraine are currently in Russia, in the territory of Rostov region," Perebyinis said at a briefing in Kyiv on Tuesday.

He said that according to Vak-Voya, Russian sometimes prevents monitors from visiting the refugees, "therefore, naming even an approximate number of refugees in Russia is impossible."

"Thus, in their reports UNHCR always refers to the figures based on the data provided by Russia's migration service," Perebyinis said.

He added that Vak-Voya had denied Russian media reports saying that the Russian office of the UNHCR intends to send a mission to Ukraine.

"He noted that the authority of Russian office of the UNHCR applies only to Russian territory, therefore sending any mission to Ukraine is out of his scope of duties," Perebyinis said.
