Poroshenko, Barroso discuss Rada elections, macro-financial aid for Ukraine

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko talked on the phone with European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso, during which the two discussed the forming of a coalition at the new Ukrainian parliament and the provision of macro-financial assistance to Ukraine.

"President Poroshenko thanked President Barroso and European Council President Herman Van Rompuy for a very important statement, in which the EU leaders called the parliamentary elections a victory of the Ukrainian people and democracy," the Ukrainian presidential press service said in a statement.

Barroso expressed the hope that a new coalition at the Verkhovna Rada would be pro-European and would begin reforms and an inclusive political dialogue in Ukraine immediately, it said.

"The European Commission president once again assured [Poroshenko] that the EU is willing to transfer EUR760 million from the first and second macro-financial assistance package by the end of the year and consider prospects for providing the third package and continue to support Ukraine in a dialogue with international financial organizations. At the same time, he emphasized the importance of financial transparency and the adoption of legislation on an audit chamber," it said.

Poroshenko and Barroso also discussed interaction in the energy sector in the run-up to another round of trilateral negotiations on gas supplies between Ukraine, the European Union and Russia scheduled for October 29 in Brussels.
