Future of Ukraine is at stake – Fule

European Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighborhood Policy Stefan Fule has said that the dramatic events of the last weeks make it clear that the future of Ukraine is now at stake.

"With the dramatic events of the last few weeks, it has become acutely clear that what is at stake now is not only respect for the most basic fundamental rights, but also the future of Ukraine," he said during a discussion regarding Ukraine at the plenary sitting of the European Parliament in Strasbourg on Wednesday.

The European Commissar said that "the EU is working hard and is taking concrete action to de-escalate the situation and to support the Ukrainian citizen's enjoyment of their freedoms of speech, peaceful assembly, and the freedom of media."

"[EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine] Ashton's, and my own visits, have helped to facilitate dialogue and avoid worst case scenarios, including a possible state of emergency. Our presence in Kyiv last week reinforced these messages. We need to keep close coordination of our messages and actions to help in easing of the situation on the ground," he said.

Fule also reported that Council of Europe and OSCE had already coordinated, whose legal expertise has been instrumental in revoking the restrictive legislation adopted on January 16.

However, the commissioner also noted the "controversial amnesty law" voted for on January 29.

"Serious distrust remains between the sides. What is needed is a serious engagement by both sides to find a negotiated solution out of the current political crisis. It is the only way to avoid vicious cycles of mutual recrimination," he said.
