Lack of solidarity was main problem of Rada of sixth convocation, says Lytvyn

Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of the 6th convocation Volodymyr Lytvyn has said that the latter parliament lacked corporate solidarity, which resulted in it taking unconstitutional actions.

"Ukrainian people's deputies feature an interesting anomaly, which is almost absent from western parliaments – they walk in the clouds over the voters, as well as the people in general, and their own colleagues. The saddest thing is that this elevation and exaltation usually influences the parliament as a government institution. Such depreciation of the Verkhovna Rada in comparison with their own meaning and humiliating and often negligent attitude of deputies to their colleagues is a mysterious phenomenon in Ukrainian politics," Lytvyn said in his final speech before the closure of work of the parliament of the 6th convocation on Thursday.

"Complete absence of corporate responsibility, corporate patriotism, a mistaken feeling of political impunity – these are the main reasons for unconstitutional leasing of voting cards [for voting in the absence of an MP], aren't they?" Lytvyn said.

"The reason for the deep disrespect for the Verkhovna Rada from people is exactly this irresponsible attitude of some deputies to their own work, and the naïve self-delusion of some parliamentarians, who think they are saints," Lytvyn said.

"I'm asking you once again to think what rules Ukrainian politicians should stick to in the future. We should find a point of rest for the unification of efforts for the sake of the country," he said.
