Ukraine gets 145 recommendations from UN member countries on respect for human rights

The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in Ukraine has noted the increased interest of other states in the human rights situation in Ukraine.

"Ukraine has received 145 recommendations ... A qualitative analysis of the recommendations indicates that Ukraine is becoming more interesting to other countries," Program Manager for Democratic Governance at the UNDP in Ukraine Yulia Scherbinina said at a meeting of the press club entitled "The United Nations Found 145 Flaws in Human Rights Observance in Ukraine. What Next?"

She said that on October 24, Ukraine delivered a report to the UN on the human rights situation, and other countries provided their recommendations. She said that about 50 countries had expressed their recommendations to Ukraine.

The UNDP representative also said that the basic recommendations for Ukraine concerned ensuring the right to a fair trial, as well as issues related to anti-discrimination legislation.

Executive Director of the Ukrainian Helsinki Human Rights Union Arkadiy Buschenko, in turn, confirmed the UN's increased interest in Ukraine.

"The Ukrainian government has done a lot in order to cause this interest, in particular, due to the political persecution of social activists," he said.

Buschenko also said that the political cases had revealed that there are systemic problems in the Ukrainian judicial system.
