The safety of participants and guests of the 2012 UEFA European Championship will be guaranteed, said Oleksandr Birsan, head of the Ukrainian president's inter-agency coordination headquarters for Euro 2012 security and public order.

"We are taking whatever steps are necessary to ensure the safety of the Euro guests and participants," he told Interfax on Friday.

Routine counter-terrorist drills are taking place in Kyiv on Friday afternoon, involving representatives from various Ukrainian law enforcement forces, Birsan said.

The Euro 2012 group matches will be held in four Ukrainian cities - Kyiv, Donetsk, Kharkiv and Lviv - in June.

Dnipropetrovsk was among the candidate cities to host group matches. On Friday, it was rocked by four explosions, which left 27 people injured, according to the latest reports.
