Ukraine earns support of USA, intl community – IMF director

Ukraine still needs $42 billion in external financing in 2024, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Kristalina Georgieva has said.

"Ukraine earned the support of the international community with very prudent actions domestically. They collect 36% to GDP in taxes. I don't know many countries that do that even without the war. They brought inflation down from 27% to 5%, they have restored the prospects for growth: growth is now 4.5%," she said in an interview with CNBC on Tuesday.

Georgieva said that if partners pull this support, there is a risk of losing all these gains made. The head of the IMF welcomed the EU's unanimous decision in early February to provide an EUR 50 billion aid package to Ukraine for 2024-2027, and noted the importance of such support from the United States.

"The logic is fairly clear. The United States, as well as many others, has made the investment in Ukraine. The American people are pragmatic. You want to return on your investment. And the return on your investment is for Ukraine to retain and improve its position. So that pragmatism hopefully will lead to the right decision," the head of the Fund expressed hope that the U.S. Congress will approve support for Ukraine.

She emphasized that from the IMF's point of view, Ukraine, which fights for international order and respect for sovereignty, is in fact fighting not only for itself, but also for the world to be a more stable and better place for business for everyone.
