Fish catch in Ukrainian water basins 17.2% up in Jan-Oct

The fish and other marine resources catch in Ukrainian water basins (inland water basins and seas) totaled 46,500 tonnes in January-October 2015, which is 17.2% up year-over-year, the press service of the State Fishing Agency has reported, referring to the State Statistics Service.

The press service said that total fish and other marine resources catch over the period fell by 6.2%, to 62,300 tonnes due to a decline in the ocean fish catch.

Fish and other marine resources catch grew thanks to a rise in fish catch in the Azov and Black seas by 44.6%, to 25,200 tonnes. Fish catch in inland water basins fell by 4.3%, to 21,200 tonnes.

In January-October 2015, fish catch grew in Sumy region by 68%, Kherson region – by 62%, Kyiv region – by 43.9%, Zaporizhia region – by 34.6%. Fish catch decreased in Luhansk region by 88.2%, Mykolaiv region by 90.4%, Chernivtsi region by 33.6% and Ivano-Frankivsk region by 33.1%.

Additionally, freshwater fish catch grew: roach – by 110%, catfish – by 80.3%, jackfish – by 40%, pike perch – by 34%, carp – by 20%, and sea-water fish catch also grew: Black Sea anchovy by 82.9%, Black Sea sprat – by 55.6% and goby – by 31.8%.

Data is provided excluding information on Crimea and Sevastopol, and the Anti-Terrorist Operation (ATO) zone.
