Potential of wine production growth in Ukraine exceeds 30%, say experts

The potential for the development of wine production has not been realized in Ukraine, according to industry experts.

According to Chairman of the Ukrainian Bureau of Vine and Wine Ivan Plachkov, this is primarily related to the low investment attractiveness of wine production due to a number of legislative provisions.

"Most vineyards, orchards, which were shared, today are not cultivated... When there is no ownership of land, it is very difficult to invest money and develop this industry," he told reporters at a press conference.

In addition, he said that the high cost of a license for wholesale trade in wine [UAH 500,000 per year] does not allow small producers to enter the market. The expert believes that the cost of the license should be diversified depending on the volume of wine production.

Executive Director of PJSC Odesavynprom Volodymyr Maslenkov said that Ukraine could increase areas under vineyards by 20,000 hectares, which will allow the additional production of 10-12 million decaliters of wine annually.

"We estimate that Ukraine should sow vineyards on about 20,000 hectares of land. Some 20,000 hectares of land are not suitable for agriculture and grain cultivation, the land is not used – this is the potential," said Maslenkov.
