The Cabinet of Ministers has determined the specialization of Ukrainian seaports, according to which the seaports of Odesa and Feodosia, among other things, will specialize in crude oil and fuel handling.

This is stipulated in Cabinet resolution No. 548-r dated July 11, 2013 on the approval of the strategy of the development of Ukrainian seaports until 2038, the text of which has been posted on the government's Web site.

According to the text of the strategy, Yuzhny seaport will specialize in handling liquid chemicals, Odesa, Mariupol, Illichivsk, Kerch and Yuzhny port – metallurgical goods (iron ore, coal, ferrous metals), Odesa, Illichivsk, Mykolaiv and Kherson ports - grain cargoes, Illichivsk and Odesa seaports – goods in containers.

Odesa, Sevastopol and Yalta seaports will perform passenger traffic, ensure the development of tourism, service cruise liners.

The specialization of seaports on the main types of cargo, given the market conditions, is determined by the following criteria: the share of cargo handling, the location of the seaport in close proximity to raw materials and production, the limitation of the existing infrastructure and the availability of promising areas for the seaport development, the best ways of goods transportation.

The direction of the development of seaports is determined taking into account their main cargo flow and the current market conditions.
