Psychological state of Ukrainians improves compared to start of full-scale invasion – Razumkov Center survey

Ukrainians' assessment of their own psychological state indicates a significant improvement in their psychological state compared to the beginning of the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation, according to a report based on the results of a survey conducted by the sociological service of the Razumkov Center and presented at a press conference at Interfax-Ukraine.

"Assessing their own psychological state as of February 24, 2022 (before the start of the war) on a scale from 0 to 10, where 0 means "maximum level of peace, confidence," and 10 corresponds to the maximum level of panic, fear, uncertainty, respondents rated it an average of 7 .0 points (49% rated it with points from 8 to 10, corresponding to a high level of panic, fear, uncertainty). Assessing their own psychological state at the time of the survey (in January 2024), respondents rated it with an average of 5.9 points. At the same time the proportion of those who rated it from 8 to 10 decreased compared to the beginning of the war from 49% to 25%, which indicates a significant improvement in their psychological state compared to the beginning of the war," according to the survey.

However, this figure is worse than in February-March 2023, when it averaged 5.1 points.

The level of satisfaction of Ukrainian citizens with life grew in the last decade before the start of the full-scale war and in 2017 and 2022 was higher compared to 2011 (5.1, 5.2 and 4.5 points, respectively, on a scale from 1 to 10, where "1 " means that the respondent is "completely dissatisfied", and "10" means "absolutely satisfied" with his life). In January 2024, compared to 2022, a decrease in this indicator to 4.7 points was recorded.

The level of life satisfaction decreased the most compared to September-October 2022 in the Western region (from 6.1 to 4.9 points). As in September-October 2022, residents of the Southern region are less satisfied with life (3.9 points), while in other regions from 4.5 points (in the East) to 4.9 points (in the West and in the Center of the country).

The feeling of satisfaction with life decreases with the age of respondents (from 5.1 points among those under 30 years old to 4.2 points among those 60 years or more).

At the same time, compared to 2017, the share of those in Ukraine who believe that most people can be trusted has increased from 17% to 27%, but the majority (62%) are of the opinion that one needs to be very careful in dealing with people (in 2017 this was 75%).

The survey was conducted from January 19 to January 25, 2024, as part of the ENGAGE Enhance Non-Governmental Actors and Grassroots Engagement activity funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and implemented by Pact in Ukraine. The survey was conducted using the face-to-face method in Vinnytsia, Volyn, Dnipropetrovsk, Zhytomyr, Zakarpattia, Zaporizhia, Ivano-Frankivsk, Kyiv, Kirovograd, Lviv, Mykolaiv, Odesa, Poltava, Rivne, Sumy, Ternopil, Kharkiv, Kherson, Khmelnytsky, Cherkasy, Chernihiv, Chernivtsi regions and the city of Kyiv (in Zaporizhia, Mykolaiv, Kharkiv, Kherson regions – only in those territories controlled by the Ukrainian government and in which hostilities are not taking place).

The survey was conducted using a stratified multi-stage sample using random sampling at the first stages of sampling and a quota method for selecting respondents at the final stage (when respondents were selected according to gender and age quotas). The structure of the sample population reproduces the demographic structure of the adult population of the territories where the survey was conducted as of the beginning of 2022 (by age, gender, type of settlement).

A total of 2,000 respondents aged 18 years and older were surveyed. The theoretical sampling error does not exceed 2.3%. At the same time, additional systematic deviations in the sample may be due to the consequences of Russian aggression, in particular, the forced evacuation of millions of citizens.
