Ukrainian producers inject 1 mcm of biomethane into UGS facilities – UABIO head
Ukrainian producers have injected their first 1 million cubic meters of biomethane into underground gas storage (UGS) facilities, according to the Board Chairman of the Bioenergy Association of Ukraine (UABIO), Heorhiy Heletukha.
"Currently, these two companies [VITAGRO and Gals-Agro] have already injected 1 million cubic meters of biomethane into Ukraine's underground gas storage facilities. This allows us to state that 2024 marked the first million cubic meters of biomethane delivered to the network and storage facilities," he said during a press conference at Interfax-Ukraine entitled "Distributed generation. How Ukraine can survive the winter of 2024/2025," held on Thursday.
"This is not yet export; it's a small batch. Buyers want to see larger volumes, so the companies are accumulating biomethane in storage facilities. Once a sufficient level is reached, they will begin exporting," Heletukha explained.
As previously reported, in October 2024, the VITAGRO group of companies – active in agriculture, energy, processing, construction, and chemical industries – along with specialists from the Khmelnytsky branch of Gas Distribution Networks of Ukraine LLC supplied biomethane to Ukraine's gas transmission system (GTS) for the first time. The biomethane was produced at a plant with an annual capacity of nearly 3 million cubic meters, initiating export potential. Subsequently, a biomethane plant owned by the Gals-Agro agricultural holding in Chernihiv region, with an annual capacity of 3 million cubic meters, also began supplying biomethane to the grid.
