Zelenskyy, Amherd discuss fate of frozen Russian assets

The financial, political and sanctions assistance of Switzerland to Ukraine is very important, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said.

"Today, we discussed a new program of long-term assistance," he said at a press conference in Bern on Monday.

"Today, at the meetings, we noted yesterday's successful work in the format of advisers on the Peace Formula. Switzerland effectively organized a meeting the day before. The representation has been significantly increased. More than 80 countries and international institutions are already involved," the president said.

Zelenskyy described the fate of the Russian assets that were frozen in various jurisdictions of the world as a "pressing issue."

"The world's majority agrees that Russian aggression is an unprovoked and illegal war which destroys not only the goals and principles of the UN Charter, but literally every principal norm of the international law, as well as brings the evil, which Europe had seen last time during World War II, back to our time," he said.

The Ukrainian president emphasized that "the use of the assets owned by Russia and individuals associated with it for the protection against Russian aggression is both an effective and just punishment for the aggressor state. The one who unleashed this war must pay the highest price for it."

"Today, at the meetings, we paid attention to this issue – the issue of justice – as well as the issue of Switzerland's participation in the creation of a tribunal for Russia's illegal aggression against Ukraine," Zelenskyy said.

"Today, some 174,000 square kilometers of our territory are contaminated by Russian mines and unexploded ordnance. Any country of the world would find it very difficult to face such a challenge on its own. Fortunately, Ukraine has helpful friends. Switzerland is one of them. We discussed holding two mine action conference this spring and fall," he said.

The head of state also said that Ukraine "counts on Switzerland's assistance to the global work on blocking all schemes for circumvention of sanctions. We can see that Russian missiles which terrorize our cities and other weapons they use, their military and defense complex – everything is based on their shadow contacts with the leading countries of the world."

"Control over such special exports is very important. I am inviting Switzerland for active work with all partners and the international sanctions group for putting pressure on Russia in order to block its terrorist potential," Zelenskyy said.
