Law-governed state must ensure basic human rights for LGBTI community

Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Human Rights, National Minorities and Interethnic Relations Hryhoriy Nemyria has called on law enforcers to ensure safety of participants of the March of Equality (LGBTI parade) due in Kyiv on June 12.

"Respect for the right to peaceful assembly is an important indicator of the development of a democratic society. This is why I am speaking in support of a peaceful human rights procession – the March of Equality – and I am calling on law enforcers to ensure public order and security during the event," reads Nemyria's statement posted on the Verkhovna Rada website.

He stressed that every Ukrainian citizen has the constitutional right to participate in peaceful assemblies or rallies and the government's duty is to guarantee security for participants of such events.

"Basic human rights must be ensured for the LGBTI community. There is no place for discrimination, intimidation, and physical violence against the minorities in a law-governed state which is aspiring to be a part of the European community," Nemyria said.
