Ukrainian ambassador to Moscow may be appointed representative to UN

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko may replace Ukraine's representative to the UN, Yuriy Serheyev, by another diplomat in the near future, a diplomatic source told Interfax-Ukraine.

"This is a usual rotation; after all, Yuriy Serheyev has occupied this office for more than eight years," the source said.

The matter concerns a reshuffle of the leadership of Ukraine's mission to the UN to make its work more efficient during the country's membership to the UN Security Council, the source said. Considering this, the rotation will be accomplished in the near future so that a new Ukrainian envoy to the UN can get the hang of things even before Kyiv acquires UN Security Council non-permanent member status on January 1, 2016.

As for possible candidacies for Ukraine's representative to the UN, Ukrainian Ambassador to Russia Volodymyr Yelchenko is under consideration as one of the most likely candidates for the office, he said.

Serheyev was appointed Ukraine's permanent representative to the UN in April 2007.

Yelchenko has served as Ukrainian ambassador to Russia since summer 2010. After Crimea became part of Russia, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry recalled Yelchenko for consultations in March 2014 and he has stayed in Kyiv since then.
