Poroshenko expects court to protect rights of Pavlohrad residents to vote in 2nd of mayoral election

Ukraine's President Petro Poroshenko has expressed his outrage over the conduct of the mayoral election Pavlohrad, Dnipropetrovsk region, in particular, the decision to cancel the second round of the election.

"I am outraged by the situation around the elections in Pavlohrad! I believe that voters, and not officials, should determine the winner of the race... I hope that the legitimate judgment of a court will protect the right of Pavlohrad citizens to vote," Poroshenko wrote on his Facebook page on Wednesday.

According to preliminary data, Opposition Bloc Anatoliy Vershyna candidate came first with 30% of the vote, followed by UKROP candidate Yevhen Terekhov with over 20% of the vote.

On October 27, the Central Election Commission adopted a resolution saying that the CEC will not allocate additional funds to the second round of mayoral elections in Pavlohrad. The CEC explained its decision by the fact that there are 90,300 voters in Pavlohrad, however, the list compiled for the October 25 election only had 89,800 voters.

Under the new electoral legislation, mayoral elections in cities where the number of voters exceeds 90,000 people are to be held in two rounds if none of the candidates receives more than 50% of the vote in the first round.
