Military prosecutor says Ilovaisk tragedy occurred because of Russian invasion, obsolete military charters

The main reasons for the tragic consequences of the military operation near Ilovaisk in Donetsk region in August 2014 were the invasion of a great number of soldiers and military hardware of the Russian Armed Forces, as well as Ukrainian servicemen having to use outdated regulatory documents, according to Ukraine's Main Military Prosecutor Anatoliy Matios.

"Experts drew to a conclusion that despite of violation of the instructions, charters, orders and other required documents, the losses announced by me in that theater of the military actions were caused by one of the main factors why the heavy consequences occurred in a form of the death of a large number of the servicemen – intrusion into Ukraine of the units of the Russian Armed Forces with the amount of 3,500 on August 23-24," Anatoliy Matios said in Kyiv on Friday.

He said that the horrible consequences of the operation near Ilovaisk were caused by the advantages of the enemy in personnel as well as in military hardware.

"As a result of the necessity of execution of the charters, instructions and bases of the activities of the Armed Forces a tragedy happened," he added.
