Kyiv bids farewell to New Zealand volunteer Dominic Abelen

In Kyiv on Tuesday, March 11, they said goodbye to the deceased soldier of the International Legion of the Main Intelligence Agency (GUR) of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, 28-year-old Dominic Abelen.
Farewell to the fallen fighter took place at the Baikove Cemetery in Kyiv. Friends and brothers-in-arms came to pay their respects to the fighter. Abelen died on August 23, 2022 near Vuhledar, the funeral will take place in New Zealand.
Abelen was a corporal in the New Zealand Army with nine years of service. He helped Ukrainian fighters, went to the front to fight Russian aggression. Abelen was appointed a group leader with the call sign Tolkien.
"Throughout his training and military career, Dominic always put his family first. He made it a point to ensure that holidays were spent together, creating fond memories with each of his loved ones. He continued to be an active part of his siblings' lives, becoming the closest confidant to each of them. Dominic made it a habit to check in on them regularly, encouraging and motivating them to reach their full potential. His dedication was to be the most caring uncle to his nephews," the memorial service for the soldier noted.
Despite his commitments, Abelen has visited over 60 countries, immersing himself in the beauty and culture of each place.
"His deep gratitude for the diversity of the world was so profound that he ultimately gave his life for the country he believed in," the speech reads.
Army brothers-in-arms noted that Abelen was selfless, kind, intelligent and goal-oriented, and "a rock and a beloved uncle" for hi family.
The New Zealand soldier was awarded the badge of distinction of the Main Intelligence Agency of the Ministry of Defence - Ukraine - Above All (August 8, 2022). He was posthumously awarded the badge of distinction of the Main Intelligence Agency of the Ministry of Defence - For Military Merit (August 25, 2022).
