Finance ministry can earmark UAH 200 mln for miners' salaries only after approval by Rada budget committee

Ukraine's Finance Ministry will be able to earmark UAH 200 million to pay debts on salaries of miners of state-run coal mines only when the Verkhovna Rada budget committee approves it.

The press service of the Finance Ministry said that the government decided to provide the funds on July 27.

"The Finance Ministry opposed this redistribution of budget expenses, as the major part of the allocated funds [UAH 155 million] will be taken from the program on the closure of five loss-making coal mines. The funds that were planned to use to shut down loss-making coal mines will be used to pay wage debts to miners," the ministry's press service said.

The ministry said that the problem is systemic and it is linked to inefficient use of budget funds.

"It is obvious that Ukraine continues financing loss-making sectors that required reforms a long time ago," the ministry said.
