State of crops improving, sprouts seen on 93% of fields

Winter crop sprouts are additionally seen on 400,000 ha during the 'February windows' (periods of warm weather), the Agricultural Policy and Food Ministry of Ukraine has reported.

Now sprouts are recorded on 93% of fields or 6.6 million ha. Crops in good and satisfactory state are on 4.5 million ha (67%) and weak on 2 million ha (33%).

Director of the farming and technical policy department at the ministry Volodymyr Topchiy said that the largest fields that are to be resowed are in Dnipropetrovsk, Kharkiv and Poltava regions.

"Weak winter barley arouses alarm. We have them on 323,000 ha or 35% of the total fields in Mykolaiv, Odesa, Dnipropetrovsk, Kherson, Zaporizhia and Kirovohrad regions. Over 70% of weak winter rapeseeds are in Mykolaiv, Kharkiv, Zaporizhia and Dnipropetrovsk regions," he said.

As of March 1, 2016, early spring crops are sowed on 45,000 ha in Kherson, Odesa and Mykolaiv regions.

First Deputy Minister Yaroslav Krasnopolsky said that due to bad weather in autumn farmers did not sow winter crops on 900,000 ha and rapeseeds on 237,000 ha.
