The September index of consumer confidence (CCI) is 80.6 which is 7.2 points lower than in August, according to a monthly survey by GfK Ukraine.

"This is the lowest index level in the last one and a half years," the company said in a press release.

"The largest drop was observed for the propensity to consume and the current personal financial standing. At the same time, expectations of devaluation and unemployment increased."

GfK Ukraine said that Propensity to Consume dropped by 11.5 percentage points, down to 79.4, and the Index of Expected Changes in Personal Financial Standing lost 7.4 percentage points, dropping to 89.7.

"The pessimism of Ukrainians regarding unemployment deepened in September: the respective index is 141.8, which is 3.8 percentage points more than in August. Besides, the tendency for inflationary expectations to get worse continued: the respective index is 184.7, which is 1.1 percentage points more than the August level," the company said.

According to the survey, the index of devaluation expectations grew by 8.8 percentage points, to 134.6.

A deterioration of the consumer confidence was seen among almost all demographic and regional groups of respondents, the company said.

"Consumer confidence was affected by a range of negative factors in September – bad weather conditions that influenced harvesting, trade problems with Russia, and increased devaluation pressure on hryvnia. Besides, the situation in export-oriented industry sectors remained difficult," GfK Ukraine analysts said.

CCI in Ukraine is calculated on the basis of a selective poll of the public. During the study, 1,000 people from 15 to 59 years old were polled.

GfK Ukraine is a Ukrainian research company. It is part of the GfK Group international research network.
