Bread prices went up an average of 10% in Georgia on Monday.

The bread price growth is due to the growth of the grain prices on the world market, the Georgian Economic Development Ministry told Interfax. Grain, which had been imported into Georgia at $250 per tonne, is being imported at the price of $350 per tonne as of October, the ministry said.

Demur Giorkhelidze, an author of the economic program of the coalition Georgian Dream, which has recently won the parliamentary elections in Georgia, said the bread price growth should not be linked to the arrival of the new government led by Bidzina Ivanishvili.

"There are various rumors that the increase in the bread prices is linked to the arrival of the new administration and that it is a result of sabotage from the departing government. We need to monitor the situation and investigate the causes," Giorkhelidze said.
