FFU prepares bill on making corruption in football a crime

2 min read

Football Federation of Ukraine (FFU) has prepared a bill on amendments to the Criminal Code of Ukraine, according to which corruption in football will be made a criminal offense.

"Ukraine is a young state. When we hear that we have problems in legislation that stop us from fully combating corruption in sports, I think that we have to pay attention to these words. The FFU has prepared a bill of amendments to the Criminal Code of Ukraine. According to this bill, criminal liability will be foreseen for corruption in Ukrainian football. We completely support the actions of Interpol and FIFA through mutual coordination in fighting match fixing in football," FFU first Vice President Serhiy Storozhenko said when delivering a speech at the seminar on fighting corruption in football in Kyiv on Tuesday.

He said that betting shops are closely connected with the organization of fixed matches, and they try to involve football players, coaches, and referees in this process.

"We can't wait - when corruption penetrates our football, we have to take resolute measures, even today. We're relying on assistance from Interpol, FIFA, and UEFA in overcoming this menace. We appreciate our responsibility, realize our own abilities and the attitude of FIFA to this phenomenon. The FFU will do everything so as to work in harmony with Interpol and FIFA in fighting match fixing and corruption in football," Storozhenko said.

A seminar on transparency in sports will be held at Football House on May 21-22.
