Ukrainian Red Cross Society to consider possibility of using its mobile teams for rehabilitation - Dotsenko

One of the tasks of the Ukrainian Red Cross Society (URCS) is to provide assistance, better access to post-rehabilitation and other social services to ensure the comfort of a person after rehabilitation, Director General of the National Committee of the Ukrainian Red Cross Society (URCS) Maksym Dotsenko said during the International Forum on Rehabilitation in Lviv on Wednesday.

According to him, in this direction, the Ukrainian Red Cross focuses on assistance, working closely with local and state authorities in building rehabilitation centers, and directly assisting patients on the spot.

"When a person returns to his small village or small town, where the nearest hospital may be located as far as 10, 20, 30 kilometers away, and he does not have quick and easy access to these services, we have to think about how to ensure either the transportation of the patient to the hospital, or the provision of an opportunity enabling a doctor, a physiotherapist, a mental specialist to come to the patient," Dotsenko stressed.

The Ukrainian Red Cross is currently implementing a project of mobile medical teams that provide assistance in the most remote settlements where access to medical services is limited. There are about 100 such medical teams now, they operate in Ukraine and provide access to hundreds of thousands of people to medical and social services.

"Yes, they are not working in the field of rehabilitation now, but we can consider the possibility, and somehow reorient it all in the direction of rehabilitation, for the convenience of patients," he said.

As earlier reported, medical workers of the brigades examine patients for free, give out medicines, prescribe referrals to specialized doctor and can take them to the hospital. First of all, they help elderly people, people with disabilities and internally displaced persons. The doctors of the teams also walk to the homes of people with limited mobility.
