Infrastructure minister announces launch of tenders to procure speed control systems on roads

Ukrainian Infrastructure Minister Volodymyr Omelyan has announced the launch of tenders to procure automated speed control systems on roads.

The minister said that after long negotiations the budget committee of the Verkhovna Rada finally approved the distribution of the money of the road safety fund.

"Next week we begin tenders for the amount of about UAH 1 billion, in particular, a significant component of which will be the procurement of automatic speed control stations. However, in order for them to work fully, we still need to amend the legislation. I hope that the parliament will react to the terrible statistics about thousands of deaths that we received on the Ukrainian roads," the minister said.

Omelyan also expressed hope for an early vote on the introduction of automatic weight control on roads.

As reported, the Cabinet of Ministers announced its intention to finance road safety through excise taxes on imported petroleum products in 2018.
