NATO summit documents show for first time that Russia is aggressor – Poroshenko

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko emphasizes that there is not a frozen conflict in the east of Ukraine, as some are trying to present it, but a real war because of Russia's aggression against Ukraine, from which the Ukrainian military and civilians continue to die.

"This is a common position of all countries that gave us security guarantees. The first thing, it is not a frozen conflict," Poroshenko said in an interview with France 24, the website of the president said on Friday.

"This is a real hot war because of Russian aggression in the east of my country. It's a sovereign Ukrainian territory, and Russia is sending troops there to kill Ukrainians," the head of state said, reminding of the casualties among the military and civilian population in Donbas.

Concerning the initiative to introduce a peacekeeping mission under the aegis of the United Nations into Donbas, Poroshenko stressed that its main task is to stop military operations and ensure the withdrawal of the aggressor's forces from the territory of Ukraine.

"Peacekeepers should not return Ukrainian sovereignty - we can do this through a political process - they must return peace to this land, stop killings. The presence of peacekeepers under the mandate of the UN Security Council can help us withdraw Russian troops from this territory, withdraw Russian tanks, artillery," said the president.

At the same time, he stated that the introduction of peacekeepers does not occur due to the blocking of this issue by Russia, in spite of the fact that it is one of the signatories of the Budapest memorandum and it acted as the guarantor of Ukraine's security.

"This does not happen, and Russia should explain to the whole world why they are against it. Peacekeepers are an international force, an objective source of information, they will come there to defend the local population and create political and defense prerequisites for the implementation of the Minsk agreements. We have security guarantees from Russia in the Budapest memorandum, we have Russia's signature under the Minsk agreements, we have Russian responsibility, which is very important," Poroshenko said.

The president of Ukraine stressed that the Russian Federation had been finally recognized as an aggressor not only in words but also in documents.

"Russia is an aggressor. And this has been demonstrated for the first time in the documents of this NATO summit. Russia's aggressive actions have led to this situation. And this is a common understanding that this is Russia and this is aggression," the Ukrainian president stressed.
