Cyber police, SBU, prosecutors prevent new Petya malware attack

Special agents of the cyber police department have prevented the second stage of the Petya malware attack on July 4 in collaboration with officers of the Ukrainian Security Service and the Kyiv city prosecution service, Ukrainian Interior Minister Arsen Avakov has said.

"The attack was due to reach its peak at 4 p.m. It started at 1:40 p.m. The cyber police blocked the mailing and activation of the virus from servers of the M.E.Doc information system before 3 p.m.," Avakov said on Facebook.

The timely actions of law enforcement agencies stopped the attack, and servers of the M.E.Doc software developer, Intellect Service, were seized.

The Intellect Service office was searched, and hardware and software, which was used to spread the malware, were impounded.

The Ukrainian cyber police department said earlier that an update of the M.E.Doc popular tax accounting software was a principal method of sending the Petya malware, which hit over 1,000 Ukrainian businesses and banks on June 27.
