Better weapons are Ukrainian army's priority - Poroshenko

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has promised to foster combat efficiency of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

"By the end of this year, we will deliver to the Ukrainian Armed Forces over 300 pieces of armor, 400 combat vehicles, 30,000 rockets and shells," the president said at Ukraine's Independence Day celebrations in the center of Kyiv on Monday.

In his words, Ukrainian troops are improving day after day and demonstrating their ability to create an efficient system of control, training and interaction.

"The skilled activity of Ukrainian troops has resulted in the recent failure of the enemy's offensive near Maryinka, Starohnativka and some other [populated localities] and in the regained control over strategic heights," the president said.

He said Ukraine immediately used artillery and other units with appropriate capacities to deter the enemy whenever necessary.

"Over the past year, we have created and strengthened our forces, although they still leave much to be desired. Volunteers, who have actively come to power in the Defense Ministry together with officers and generals and are holding a real managerial revolution there, have gotten down to business," Poroshenko said.
