Around 5,000 law enforcement officers will be providing public order in Kyiv on Independence Day on August 24, Kyiv police chief Oleksandr Tereschuk said.

"About 5,000 policemen will be on duty in Kyiv," he said at a briefing on Friday.

Starting from 6 p.m. on August 23, control will be tightened over the central part of the capital, he said.

"Policemen, along with police officers, will block entries (to the city) to check transport with the aim to discover possible weapons, explosives and so on," he said.

Also, bomb explosive and dog experts will be brought in from across Ukraine, he said.

Tereschuk warned citizens of possible inconveniences: they can be asked to open their bags and vehicles heading into the center will be checked.

At the behest of Ukrainian Interior Minister Arsen Avakov, more roadblocks manned by Kyiv regional police are being installed at entry points to city to check suspicious transport vehicles, he said.
