The Verkhovna Rada has adopted as a whole a bill on the election of mayors of cities in two rounds.

A total of 245 MPs voted for draft law No. 1098, authored by the leader of the European Party of Ukraine, MP Mykola Katerynchuk, on Thursday.

Under the bill, the candidate who receives the most votes is declared a deputy, village or city head elected in a single-member constituency (in cities with a population of less than 500,000 people). If two or more candidates the post of a village or city head (in cities with a population of less than 500,000 people) collect the highest and a similar number of votes in a constituency, a repeat vote on these candidates is held.

A candidate who received more than half of the vote is considered a city mayor elected in a single-member constituency (in cities with a population of over 500,000 people).

If two or more candidates for city mayor (in cities with a population of over 500,000 people) collect the highest and a similar number of votes in a constituency, a repeat vote on these candidates is held, but not later than in three weeks.

During a repeat vote (if there are two candidates on the ballot) the candidate who obtains the most votes is considered an elected city mayor.
