Turkey to pass to Ukraine proposals on LNG terminal soon, says ambassador

Ukraine will soon receive from Turkey proposals on the construction of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) сon its territory, Ukraine's Ambassador to Turkey Serhiy Korsunsky has said.

"We are waiting for their proposals, specific projects, [we want to know] what sum of funding we are talking about, [and] there are a lot of technical details here," the diplomat said at a meeting of a press club in Kyiv on Thursday.

According to the ambassador, earlier Ukraine proposed that an old LNG terminal on the South of Istanbul, which regularly handles liquefied natural gas from other countries, be used.

"We started a dialogue with Turkey to enlarge this terminal and receive a part of the gas through it. However, Turkey refused to enlarge it, as it wanted to build a new terminal near the Marmara Sea," the ambassador said.

According to him, the Turkish side invited Ukraine to cooperate in the construction of a new terminal on its territory.

"Today we're considering this issue. We've invited the Turkish side to visit Ukraine in a week and hold the fourth meeting of the working group on energy, and asked them to bring their proposals to the meeting and present them to us," Korsunsky said.

He added that the business project is a very interesting direction of cooperation that could allow Ukraine to find alternative energy supply sources.
