Zelenskyy thanks USA for new package of sanctions against Russia
The new package of sanctions against more than 400 entities associated with the Russian energy sector significantly undermines the financial foundation of the Russian military machine, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.
"I am grateful to U.S. President Biden, his administration and the entire American people for the new package of sanctions announced today against more than 400 entities associated with the Russian energy sector. The bipartisan support of the United States is really crucial, and we feel it very well," Zelenskyy said on Telegram on Friday evening.
He said the sanctions imposed disrupt the supply chain in Russian energy trade.
"These measures significantly undermine the financial foundation of the Russian military machine, because they disrupt the supply chain: key Russian manufacturers, insurance companies, oil and gas service providers, 184 tankers of the shadow fleet, logistics facilities and third-country companies," Zelenskyy said.
The head of state also noted the importance of introducing restrictions for Russian mining companies.
"It is especially worth noting the pressure on companies such as Surgutneftegas, a key financial wallet for Putin himself. Such actions send a clear signal: criminals must pay for their crimes. The less income Russia receives from oil and other energy resources, the faster peace will be restored," Zelenskyy said.
The President of Ukraine said energy resources should not be used as a weapon, "as Russia does." At the same time, Zelenskyy noted that countries that "respect international law" can and should ensure stable and reliable energy supplies for the entire world. "We are truly grateful for America's leadership in holding Russia accountable. I am confident that these steps will significantly reduce Russia's petrodollar revenues, and with them its ability to continue aggression," he said.
