Borrell hopes for unblocking of European Peace Facility for military support to Ukraine

High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell hopes that the foreign ministers of the EU member states will be able to take a decision that will help unblock the European Peace Facility for the purpose of further financing military support for Ukraine.
He told journalists this in Luxembourg on Monday while announcing the agenda for the EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting. “The same [in the agenda], Ukraine and Middle East. In both the situation is becoming worse. In Ukraine, the grain export has become a problem again. Russia is hitting the ships in three cases. The ships transporting grain has been attacked by the Russians. We have to increase our support. That is the only possible solution from our side. We will continue discussing about how to unblock European peace facility payments and how to increase the anti-aerial capacity. We have to end with the cycle. They destroy, we repair,” Borrell detailed.
The EU High Representative also pointed out the need “to avoid destruction. “The winter is already there. The electricity system continues being heated and the war continues. Ukrainians are resisting, but they need more support. So today the member states we discussed, we listened to the new foreign first minister of Ukraine and we will, I hope, take some decisions in order to increase our support,” he added.
As is known, since May 2023, Hungary has blocked the allocation of EUR 6.6 billion in military aid to Ukraine.
