Agrarian Ministry develops draft Strategy for Food Security of Ukraine

The Ministry of Agricultural Policy and Food has developed a draft Strategy for Food Security of Ukraine, according to which it intends in the medium term to increase the production potential of domestic agricultural products to 200 million tonnes, and grains and oilseeds to 150 million tonnes.

“Achieving these indicators can almost double the volume of exports of Ukrainian agricultural products and processed products, ready-made food products,” states the draft document, which was published on the website of the joint representative body of representative all-Ukrainian trade union associations.

It is also noted that such an increase in the production of crop products in Ukraine will stimulate the development of livestock farming and the accompanying production of feed and other food products (proteins, special fats, gluten, dairy products, meat products, etc.).

The authors of the strategy consider the production of “self-brand” products for global retail chains and food manufacturers to be another promising direction for promoting agricultural products in foreign markets.

It is expected that the Ukrainian agro-industrial complex in the short term may become the most attractive win-win investment portfolio, estimated at $57 billion. At the same time, the largest investment segments in the ministry are green energy and logistics (biomethane, irrigation systems, elevators, “green” agricultural logistics), production of finished products (fruits, vegetables and their processed products, milk and dairy products, meat products), production of equipment and resources (plant protection products, nitrogen and complex fertilizers, agricultural machinery, seeds), deep processing (oils and special fats, proteins, starch and gluten).

“Taking into account such prospects, priority will be given to programs for the development of production, market and logistics infrastructure, including irrigation and drainage infrastructure, and projects for the deep processing of agricultural products,” the document states.
