Govt hires advisors to protect Ukraine's interests in WTO disputes with Russia

The Ukrainian government has decided to hire legal advisors to protect the country's rights and interests in the dispute with Russia in the World Trade Organization (WTO) Dispute Settlement Body.

The decision is outlined in government resolution No. 679-r dated September 22, 2016 and posted on the government's website.

"For the provision of the proper protection of Ukraine' rights and interest in the trade and economic sphere within the WTO rules, in particular, to attract legal advisors, the Cabinet of Ministers passed a resolution to apply the negotiation procurement procedure," the government said.

According to the report, the decision would help to quickly attract legal advisors to challenge the unjustifiable, non-transparent and discriminative steps made by Russia which create large obstacles and affect Ukraine's trade with third countries.

According to the resolution, the advisors will be attracted in case DS 499 Russia - Measures affecting the importation of railway equipment and parts thereof.

The advisors will be also attracted in relation with restriction of transit from Ukraine across Russia to third countries and in connection with the application of restrictive measures against imports of Ukrainian goods by Russia.
