Antiterror information campaign launched in Ukraine
Kyiv, March 29 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The Antiterror information and explanatory campaign has been launched in Ukraine to inform Ukrainians on how to behave in crowds or in case of emergencies and terrorism threats, as well as take an active position in the fight against terrorism.
The campaign was developed and is being implemented by the Planet of Support International Charity Fund, in close cooperation with law enforcement agencies.
The campaign is being promoted as part of the preparations of the country for hosting the Euro 2012 European Football Championship but the organizers are planning to make it a long-term one, Director of the Planet of Support International Charity Fund Ihor Kit said at a press conference hosted by Interfax-Ukraine on Thursday.
The organizers of the campaign conducted a sociology study to survey the level of Ukrainian citizens' awareness of the threat of terrorism. According to the poll, 79% Ukrainians do not know how they should behave in case of emergencies and only 21% respondents know what to do.
A Web site antiterror.com.ua was launched to inform the population of Ukraine on the rules of behaviour during evacuations, in crowds, if they noticed a suspicious object, in transport, in case of a bomb threat, if a person was taken hostage, or if a person is being threatened. The Web site also contains recommendations on teaching children, as well as on travelling abroad.
The organizers of the campaign have drawn up and circulated information materials (leaflets, brochures, lectures) and are planning to organize seminars and lectures for the public, at schools, and at enterprises.
"This is important, because Ukrainians, especially senior citizens, have not got used, for instance, to the emergency numbers 101, 102, and 103," Kit said.
In addition, everyone can donate UAH 5 to the Antiterror campaign on the Web site: planetofsupport.org.
The campaign is supported by volunteers and the Planet of Support Fund, as well as the Foreign Ministry, the Emergencies Ministry, Lviv State University of Vital Activity Safety under the Emergencies Ministry, the NATO Information and Documentation Centre, State Service of Youth and Sports of Ukraine, and youth and public organizations.
