Opinion: Amendments to law on food quality and safety could hit consumers' rights
Kyiv, March 28 (Interfax-Ukraine) – A moratorium should be planed on amendments to the present laws on food quality, in particular, the law "On the quality and safety of food", Director of the Institute of Consumer Programs Natalia Borodachova has said.
"We're calling for a moratorium on the removal of regulations from the law on food quality and also on any amendments and supplements to the law that are not widely discussed with the public," she said at a press conference hosted by the Interfax-Ukraine agency on Tuesday.
"We have a good law on the protection of consumers' rights, which in many spheres is better than in other countries. Yes, it has flaws, but they could be corrected. Now, conceptually, it still protects consumers' rights," President of the Pulse Ukrainian Federation of Consumers Natalia Prytulska said.
According to her, the draft law on amendments to the law on food quality and safety violates the rights of consumer to obtain information about food on packaging.
"In fact, according to this law, the producer is to decide what information about food should be given," Prytulska said.
