KYIV. Feb 7 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The adoption by the Verkhovna Rada of a bill on improvement of legal protection of inventions and useful models will allow Ukrainian pharmaceutical manufacturers to develop generic drugs more quickly and efficiently.

This opinion was expressed by the head of the strategic planning department of Farmak pharmaceutical company, Yuriy Komarov, at a press conference at Interfax-Ukraine.

He noted that the regulatory and legal framework existing in Ukraine contains a large number of "unresolved issues that are used by unscrupulous plaintiffs" to stop the process of drug development or imports of substances needed for this.

"This legal field should be more transparent, barriers must be demolished that do not allow the efficient development of generics," he said.

The existing legislation creates conditions under which Ukrainian companies can sold generic drugs six months or a year later than any European one, Komarov said.

As reported, on February 1 the Verkhovna Rada registered the bill on amendments to some legislative acts of Ukraine to improve the legal protection of inventions and useful models, developed by the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade.

Farmak is a member of the Medicines Manufacturers of Ukraine association.
