UNICEF becomes partner of Men's U-16 EuroBasket Championship 2013 in Kyiv

The local organizing committee of EuroBasket 2015 and UNICEF have agreed to cooperate in holding the Men's U-16 European Basketball Championship Men in Ukraine.

"I'm very glad that UNICEF in Ukraine will become a partner of the U-16 basketball championship, drawing the attention of society to the importance of the protection of children's rights, and their physical and cultural education. This partnership will be aimed at the promotion of basketball and importance of the protection of children's rights, especially those who are the most socially vulnerable. Sport is an important platform for their physical and spiritual upbringing. We expect joint sport events in future to improve life of the children in Ukraine," UNICEF Representative in Ukraine Yukie Mokuo said.

As part of cooperation between the EuroBasket 2015 organizing committee and UNICEF, a social project aimed at drawing the attention of society to children who live in difficult life circumstances will be implemented. The details of the project will be informed in the end of July.

The men's U-16 European championship will take place in Kyiv Palace of Sports on August 8-18, 2012 and will feature the 16 best teams of Europe.

The U-16 European Basketball is held for the national teams for young men aged up to 16. The tournament was firstly held in 1971 and took place once every two years. Since 2004 the tournament has been held each year.

The national team of Yugoslavia gas won the championship nine times running, and the national team of the Soviet Union won the trophy three times. Turkey is the current U-16 basketball champion of Europe.
