Right Sector demands resignation of Ukrainian interior minister

2 min read

About 1,000 representatives and supporters of the radical group Right Sector gathered on Constitution Square in front of the Ukrainian parliament building this morning to demand the resignation of Interior Minister Arsen Avakov.

The demonstrators are wearing fatigues, many have their faces covered with headscarves or balaclavas, an Interfax correspondent said. Many of those present are wearing "Right Sector" armbands.

About 50 Maidan Self-Defense representatives are protecting the entrances to the Verkhovna Rada building.

Right Sector is not going to storm the building on Friday, Right Sector's Kyiv leader Ihor Mazur said.

"Our demands: Avakov's resignation and a fair investigation of the Sashko Bily murder," he told reporters.

If today the authorities fail to heed these demands, Right Sector representatives will consult the Maidan and put this matter to a veche (a kind of popular assembly), he also said.

A day earlier Right Sector held a warning picket outside Rada to demand the interior minister's resignation.

The rally outside the parliament will continue on Friday morning, one of the Right Sector leaders Andriy Bondarenko said on Thursday evening.

"Our official position is this: we are against the storming of Verkhovna Rada. What happened today was a warning. Our actions were provoked by the Interior Ministry led by Avakov," he said, adding that on Friday there will be "a peaceful rally (outside the parliament) which will demonstrate our position against a specific individual."
