Lutsenko does not need examination, insists on further treatment, his wife says

Former Ukrainian Interior Minister Yuriy Lutsenko currently does not need another examination and insists on further treatment in the Oberig Clinic in Kyiv, his wife, MP Iryna Lutsenko, has said.

"Lutsenko needs another examination. He insists on the continuation of treatment in the Oberig Clinic, which was cynically and arbitrarily interrupted by the penitentiary service," she said, while commenting on a statement made by the State Penitentiary Service regarding Lutsenko's alleged refusal to undergo an examination.

She again said that a team of doctors from the Oberig Clinic in January 2013 established a full diagnosis of Lutsenko's diseases and outlined clear procedures and methods for his treatment using the clinic's equipment and by the doctors of the clinic.

"Lutsenko has chosen a medical institution, a doctor and methods of treatment. The provision of medical care was paid for. He has such a right under Articles 6, 34 and 38 of the law of Ukraine on the principles of Ukrainian legislation on health care, Articles 107 and 116 of the Criminal Executive Code and Article 284 of the Civil Code of Ukraine," the MP said.

"The formation by the penitentiary service of a Health Ministry commission to examine Lutsenko has only one goal - to create the appearance, rather than the real treatment of the prisoner," Lutsenko said.

Lutsenko was detained on December 25, 2010. He was arrested under a court ruling several days later.

On February 27, 2012, Kyiv's Pechersky District Court found Lutsenko guilty of several crimes and sentenced him to four years in prison. Kyiv Court of Appeals upheld that sentence.

On August 17, 2012, Pechersky District Court found Lutsenko guilty of negligence in the extension of operational search activities on Valentyn Davydenko, who worked as a driver for Volodymyr Satsiuk, former deputy head of the Ukrainian Security Service, and sentenced him to two years of imprisonment.

The former interior minister has been serving his sentence for several crimes in the Mena colony, Chernihiv region, since August 31, 2012.

Lutsenko underwent surgery in the Oberig private clinic in Kyiv in late January 2013. After the surgery he was transferred back to Mena Penal Colony in Chernihiv region on January 30.

The ex-minister's defense lawyer, Oleksiy Bahanets, stated that his client has been diagnosed with cirrhosis, hepatitis, portal hypertension and other illnesses. He stressed that a person that suffers from such diseases cannot be imprisoned.
