Lazarenko to come back Ukraine when political situation gets better, lawyer says

Ex-premier of Ukraine Pavlo Lazarenko will come back to his native country, but it is unknown when, his lawyer Maryna Dolhopola has said.

"Pavlo Lazarenko will come back Ukraine. I can't give a precise date of his return," she said at the press conference in Kyiv on Wednesday.

Dolhopola said her client doesn't know when he will return to Ukraine. According to her, Lazarenko said that he would come back, "when the political situation improves", wishing his case to be considered by an unprejudiced inquiry and trial.

"Probably, Lazarenko expects a fair trial in Ukraine. Maybe he expects an unprejudiced inquiry regarding those criminal cases that today are open against him in Ukraine," she said.

The lawyer also said that "today it seems that the return of Pavlo Lazarenko shouldn't have any legal consequences, since there are decisions of the foreign states that indicate that Lazarenko's actions in Ukraine have no corpus delicti, or evidence of criminal activity.

Dolhopola said that if Ukraine could give Lazarenko a fair trial, he would be released with an acquittal.
