Ecology ministry points out growth of emissions after industrial enterprises stop consuming gas

The volume of emissions by enterprises in 2016 grew by 7.7%, and one of the reasons of it is the switch from natural gas to other types of fuel, Ecology and Natural Resources Minister Ostap Semerak said at a briefing in Kyiv on Tuesday.

"In 2014, emission totaled 3.35 million tonnes, in 2015 – 2.857 million tonnes and in 2016 – 3.078 million tonnes. It is likely that the upward trend is linked to the increase in the number of enterprises and the replacement of natural gas by other types of fuel," he said, presenting top 100 polluter companies.

He said that the reviewed rating includes 33 enterprises with largest emissions, 33 enterprises producing the largest amounts of waste and 34 largest water polluters.

The ministry said that emission of 33 enterprises with the largest emissions totaled 2.316 million tonnes last year. This was 200,000 more than in 2015.

"Ten out of 25 enterprises with largest emissions are mining and metal companies and 15 power generating companies," Semerak said.

Leader in emissions is ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih (Dnipropetrovsk region) cut emissions from 275,080 tonnes to 272,850 tonnes, while Illich Steel Works increased emissions from 171,690 tonnes to 178,140 tonnes.

Burshtyn thermal power plant is third in emissions. The enterprise cut emissions from 197,960 tonnes to 168,489 tonnes last year.

Azovstal is the leader in water pollution. The enterprise decreased the figure from 141.5 million cubic meters to 140.7 million cubic meters last year.

In a year, 34 largest water polluters decreased water pollution by 6.7%, to 583.325 million cubic meters.

Pivnichny Mining is the enterprise producing the largest amount of waste with 75.28 million tonnes in 2015 and 64.56 million tonnes in 2016.

Semerak said that the ministry proposes to replace old methods for registering emissions, waste and pollution.

"We support the national monitoring in Ukraine. It envisages the obligatory installation of filters and meters for each pipe. All Ukrainians should have free access to this information. The strict rules are to be introduced: if you use your limits for emissions you are to pay," the minister said.
