More than 2,000 oak trees to be planted on Khortytsia Island to mark 100th anniversary of Ukraine's, Lithuania's battle for independence
KYIV. April 19 (Interfax-Ukraine) – National Corps Party activists have announced plans to plant 2,100 oak trees on Khortytsia Island in Zaporizhia region to mark the 100
th anniversary of Ukraine's and Lithuania's battle for independence and to remember Ukrainian soldiers who perished in battle for the sake of Ukraine's statehood and freedom.
During a press conference on Thursday at the Kyiv-based Interfax-Ukraine news agency, Lithuanian Ecology Ministry representative Kestutis Markevicius said the all the oak seedlings are of exceptional quality, adding they were delivered to Ukraine on April 16, 2018.
"We brought 4-year old trees… I think the entire Lithuanian population supports Ukraine. I don't know any Lithuanians who don't support Ukraine. And I don't want to know them. We thought this action would give an impulse to develop ties between our countries," he said.
In turn, National Corps Party spokesman Oleksandr Alferov said the trees would be planted on Saturday, April 21.
"The first trees will be planted by relatives of Ukrainian soldiers killed in action. It will not simply be a memorial event – we intend to raise the history of our peoples and therefore planned several events. There will be tour of the Island, the Khortytsia Museum. In the evening we will open a memorial to fallen soldiers," he said.
