Ukraine has brought over 250 standards in food safety into line with European law, First Deputy Minister of Agricultural Policy and Food Ivan Bisiuk said.

"Over 253 standards in food safety have been validated," he said at the international conference on food safety entitled "Reforming the Food Safety System in Ukraine: a Model for the Future."

Bisiuk said that over the next three years Ukraine is to validate 62 standards and five regulations regarding agriculture every year in line with the European requirements.

He said that a draft law on amendments to some Ukrainian laws on food safety should be passed by Ukraine for the further harmonization of Ukrainian law with European one.

Bisiuk said that he hopes that the document will be passed at first reading by the parliament next week.

He also said that at one state the agency should be responsible for the quality and safety of food in the country.

At present, several agencies are responsible for this, including the State Veterinary and Biosecurity Service, Sanitary Epidemiological Service and the State Inspectorate for Protection of Consumer Rights.
