Ukraine's Recovery: What Education Do Our Children Need?

Olena Tovkun, Supervisory Board member, The British International School, Ukraine

In 1997, The British International School, Ukraine, opened its doors to students and ushered in a new era of education in the country. Children were granted access to cutting-edge teaching methods and a diverse range of learning resources. They also enjoyed a safe, friendly, and secure learning environment, where teachers and students explored the world together, exchanged ideas, communicated, cooperated with peers from different countries, and engaged in thrilling collaborative projects. These principles eventually formed the foundation of education reform in Ukraine.

We pioneered British-style education in Ukraine, and our bilingual school provides students with two curricula. Upon graduation, they earn the national state-standard Certificate of complete secondary education, along with A-level qualifications and an IB diploma, which pave the way to prestigious universities in the UK, USA, and EU countries.

Our school welcomes students from all corners of the world, allowing our children to be part of a diverse, multicultural community from the age of three. They are taught to appreciate and respect traditions from various nations, exposed to a wide array of customs and cultures, and raised to develop into genuine global citizens. Beginning in the Early Years, our international curriculum is delivered in English by qualified educators who hold valid diplomas and work permits for Ukraine in their respective fields.

Our school features the state-of-the-art facilities on par with those found in top schools worldwide. We use sophisticated technology and Cambridge-endorsed textbooks, sourced directly from the UK. Our school furniture, too, is carefully chosen from items exhibited at renowned education expos in London. We think it is essential to stay updated with the latest educational opportunities to provide Ukrainian children with the finest learning experience possible.

High quality education enables our graduates to smoothly advance to the world’s best universities. They excel in English and are proficient in using it across all subjects. They are well-versed in international teaching and learning methods and have a worldwide network of friends, making them self-reliant.

Education is where it all starts. The children of today's Ukraine are the generation that will shoulder the crucial responsibility of rebuilding the country after the war. That's why they need the type of education that will empower them to steer their nation toward becoming a global leader.
