Cox, Kwasniewski meet with Yanukovych in Kyiv

The European Parliament's monitoring mission of former EP President Pat Cox and former Polish President Aleksander Kwasniewski met with Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych in his administration in Kyiv on Thursday, Ukraine's Fifth Channel has reported.

The meeting lasted an hour.

The observers declined to disclose the results of their conversation with the head of state.

"We made the decision that during our mission we will not comment on anything, because we are working," Cox said.

Cox and Kwasniewski plan to visit former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko in Kharkiv on Thursday.

Tymoshenko was arrested on August 5, 2011 during her trial on what is referred to as the gas case. On October 11, 2011, the Pechersky District Court in Kyiv sentenced Tymoshenko to seven years in prison for exceeding her authority when signing gas supply contracts with Russia in 2009. She has been serving her sentence at the Kachanivska correctional facility in Kharkiv since late December 2011.

On May 9, 2012, Tymoshenko was moved from the prison to Central Clinical Hospital No. 5 in Kharkiv. The procedures for the ex-premier's treatment in hospital have been selected by German doctors from the Charite Clinic.

Former Polish President Aleksander Kwasniewski and former European Parliament President Pat Cox became observers from the European Parliament on the trial of ex-premier Yulia Tymoshenko and began their work on June 11, 2012.

On October 4, 2013, it was announced that Kwasniewski and Cox had handed to Tymoshenko a proposal to undergo treatment in Germany and the ex-premier had accepted it. They also submitted a petition to the Ukrainian president asking him to pardon Tymoshenko.

On October 22, Batkivschyna faction leader Arseniy Yatseniuk said that Tymoshenko had agreed to a "partial pardon."
